Abstract

This descriptive study was undertaken in order to identify the importance and the degree of the importance of the learning needs for mothers during the early puerperium.
The period for data collection was needed 31 days from November 24 to December 24. 1988.
The purposive sampling technique was used in the selection of the subjects. The subjects were 177 maternity patients admitted to five general hospitals in Seoul between November 24 to December 25, 1988, who had uncomplicated, healthy newborns.
A questionaire consisting of 18 maternal care teaching items and 22 infant care teching items. Respondents rated each topic¢¥s teaching priority on a 4-point, Very Important to Not Very Important, and the reliability of the used instruments was a =.8434.
The data analysis was done by SPSS with frequency, percentages, means standard deviations, t-test, and ANOVA were done_ according to the purpose of the study.
The result of this study were as follows.
1. The demographic characteristics of mother were as follows;
The average age of mother was 29.3, 71.8% were unemployed, 37.9% were christians. In the sample, 55.4% were primiparas, 59.9% were cesarean sectio-l in type of delivery. Each 76.8%, 72.3% were not ever received prenatal and postpartum teaching and each 26.0%, 18.6% were had not confidence in maternal self care and infant care.
2. All the groups of subjects stressed the importance of the 40 items should included in mother¢¥s postpartum teaching both the total 18 maternal teaching items and 22 infant care teaching items.
Mean score of educational needs of subjects war 132 (maximum 160). The mean score of total items war 3.3(maximum 4) and infants care items(3.34) was more higher than maternal self care (3.26) .
3. The maternal care items of the highest in importance was "postpartum complication (3.68)¢¥, followed by ¢¥stitches/episiotomy", "breast care "medicines", ¢¥infant illnesses" was the infant care topic by the largest proportion(3.88) followed by "immunization "well baby care", "infant safety", "newborn joundice".
